Hi folks
Well, I was supposed to be having a foot operation next Thursday. The date was carefully chosen to provide minimum disruption at school and I have spent ages getting organised. I just heard my surgeon has to have an operation himself and so mine is cancelled. Even if I switch to a different surgeon it can't be done until after Xmas. I am really reluctant to let someone I don't know do it and I was all psyched up for it. What makes it worse is that the same thing happened when the other foot was done last May. That time I turned out to be MRSA positive. I was quite looking forward to Xmas with my foot up and the family doing most of the work for a change!!
Oh we'll, back to the drawing board.

So sorry to hear this, Sue - what a let-down for you when you were all set. Hope you can still enjoy Christmas, and are able to get another date in the not too distant future.

Take care,

Hi all
Well I've heard from the hospital. I have 2 choices. I can wait for my surgeon ( about 2 months ) or I can change to a different one and have it in early January. The operation was originally going to be under a local but the replacement surgeon will insist on a general anaesthetic. When I looked him up he is called an orthopaedic surgeon and I can only find mention of him doing hips and knees, no mention of feet. My original man is a foot specialist and has a very good reputation. I would prefer it early for other reasons ( my daughter in law is having a kidney transplant sometime next year and my son may be her living donor. If he is I shall need to be able to go and help them) however, I am strongly leaning towards waiting for the one I know . Someone once told me you should always go for a foot specialist rather than a general orthopaedic surgeon and that does seem sensible. I shall have to ponder.

Hi Sue,

my pennies worth, I would wait for original Surgeon..hopefully you will be fully recovered by the time your daughter in law has her op.

just to let you know my friend had his kidney removed in October and he's doing brilliantly, in fact he's driving now and he and his wife are visiting us this afternoon,

Yep - I agree - if it's only another 4 weeks for the expert, I'd wait, but it's your call

Me too, Sue - I`d wait for the foot specialist, even though it would be a longer wait.

Thanks all
I agree with you all and have told the hospital I will wait. At least I can do all the Xmas stuff I thought I would have to miss. Family are quite pleased to hear they won't have to cook Xmas dinnerLaugh

Hi All
Well, I have a new date for the op. New Years Eve! Luckily we don't do much for New Year - I struggle to stay awake to midnight. My original surgeon is now off for 6 months - goodness only knows what is wrong with him. However I was offered 2 possible dates with a new man who specialises in bunions so I accepted. I shall be off work for all of January so that is a plus. I shall think of my colleagues getting up in the dark and scraping their cars while I sit with my feet up, in the warmLaugh
Happy Christmas everyone.

Hi Sue
That's good news. At least you are not having to wait too long, and as you say you will not have to put up with so much of the ice scraping and cold winter mornings! And somebody else can take the Christmas tree down???

Good luck with the op and Happy Christmas, and Happy Christmas to all Rheumy mates out there too Smile

Happy New Year everyone.
My foot was finally done this morning so I will be spending new year on the sofa being looked after by husband and daughter. At the moment it feels very numb but painkillers are on standby!
I was a bit thrown when the doctor said he was going to remove the joint of my hammer toe. I thought it was just a case of cutting the tendon. He did explain why but I would have liked a chance to google it and have a think. He showed me my foot before he bandaged it which was good as last time I had to wait until the bandages came off to see what it looked like. The toe looked a bit strange and rather short. I just need to hope he knows what he was talking about.

Hope you have a speedy recovery. Don't hesitate to take the painkillers - there are no prizes for suffering!
